About This Tour
Zaanse Schans is the postcard image of the Netherlands — working windmills lined up along the river, green wooden houses, and a cheese farm you can actually walk into. It's a short trip from Amsterdam, which makes it the easiest way to see 'classic Holland' in half a day.
We visit a working windmill, watch a clog-making demonstration, and taste cheese straight from the farm.
The windmills here aren't museum props — several are still fully operational, grinding spices, pigment or oil exactly as they did in the 1600s, and the miller inside will usually explain what that day's mill is working on. It's a nice contrast to how quiet and residential the rest of the village feels once the morning coach groups move on.
