Amsterdam

Canals, museums and village life in the city

Amsterdam's 17th-century canal ring is a UNESCO World Heritage site — but the city is much more than a museum. It's a place where people live on houseboats, cycle to work and meet friends in candlelit brown cafés.

What to see

  • The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum
  • The Jordaan and the Nine Streets
  • The Anne Frank House (book weeks ahead)
  • Vondelpark and the markets of De Pijp

Getting there

From Schiphol Airport, trains run to Amsterdam Central Station every few minutes and take about 15 minutes. In the city, walk, cycle or use trams.

Best time to visit

April–May and September are ideal: mild weather, long days and fewer crowds than in summer. Avoid King's Day (27 April) if you don't like crowds — or go for exactly that reason!
