Giethoorn

The village without roads

In Giethoorn, thatched farmhouses sit on little islands connected by more than 170 wooden bridges. There are no roads in the old village — only footpaths, bike paths and canals.

What to see

  • A whisper-boat ride through the canals
  • The Weerribben-Wieden National Park
  • Thatched farmhouses and wooden bridges
  • The quiet side canals away from the centre

Getting there

It's about two hours from Amsterdam: train to Steenwijk, then a local bus. Public transport works, but connections take time.

Best time to visit

May, June and September are beautiful. Arrive before 10 am or stay after 4 pm to enjoy the canals without the crowds.
